In the scenic heart of South Africa’s Western Cape, Banhoek Coffee Co. is pioneering an eco-friendly approach to coffee roasting and packaging. Air-roasted coffee, a method celebrated for its clean and distinct flavour profile, relies on hot air and lower temperatures for a more even roast. This technique not only enhances the coffee’s taste but aligns with the sustainable ethos of today’s environmentally conscious consumers.
With a staggering 83% of consumers emphasising the importance of environmentally friendly products, Banhoek Coffee Co. has responded by embracing 100% recyclable coffee pouches for their air-roasted coffee. This commitment to sustainability is not just about the coffee; it’s a testament to the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting conservation efforts, such as their partnership with the Cape Leopard Trust.

Dayne Larke, founder of Banhoek Coffee Co., shares insights into the air-roasting process, a method that significantly reduces smoke production and energy consumption compared to traditional drum roasting. By utilising a fluid bed roaster, the company ensures that the coffee beans are roasted uniformly, avoiding the smoky or burnt flavors often associated with drum-roasted coffee. This method is not only quicker but also more energy-efficient, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 25%.
When it comes to packaging, Banhoek Coffee Co. has chosen low-density polyethylene (LDPE) for its durability, flexibility, and recyclability. This material strikes a balance between maintaining the quality of the coffee and moving towards more sustainable practices. The brand’s packaging, inspired by the natural beauty of the Banhoek Valley and featuring a striking geometric line-art logo of a leopard, reflects the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Larke points out that the choice of packaging material for air-roasted coffee is driven by the brand’s ethos rather than the roasting method itself. “Our decision on 100% recyclable coffee packaging and the efficient method of air-roasting aligns with our mission to reduce our carbon footprint and support sustainability,” he explains.
In a world where consumers are increasingly looking for sustainable options, Banhoek Coffee Co.’s approach to air-roasted coffee and recyclable packaging sets a precedent for the coffee industry. By focusing on environmental responsibility without compromising on quality, the company not only caters to the eco-conscious market but also contributes to a more sustainable future.
